And the mountain comes to Kerala….

…or rather more precisely to Trivandrum, the capital of Kerala. And so it turned out that, unlike Mohammed, I didn’t have to go to the mountain after all!

It is likely that the above sentence is cryptic and warrants an explanation: I always wanted to attend the Hay Festival at Hay-on-Wye, Wales. Hence, over the course of many years, plans were created, polished, and always postponed to the subsequent year. And like the punishments meted out to those in Tartarus, the plans came to naught…. until November 11th, 2010.

Because of a manically busy October and November, I couldn’t get the chance to pick up the newspaper – and hence, was exceptionally surprised to come across the detailed schedule of a Hay Festival in Kerala, published in the regional daily, The Hindu’s 11th November edition. My initial scepticism (‘really? Hay Festival? In Kerala? Is this some belated April 1st prank?') gave way to shouts of glee, and soon, I decided to squeeze in the Hay festival despite other commitments. After all, such opportunities are not to be scoffed at, especially when the venue (Kanakakunnu Palace) is barely a kilometre away from chez moi (a walk of 20-25 minutes, and 10-15 minutes via a short-cut).

Thus, my subsequent posts are on the 3-day Hay Festival held at the Kanakakunnu Palace in Trivandrum… so hold on and explore how to make Hay in the sunshine.
